David Brooks - Lack of Chinese Griving
The New York Times Journalist, David Brooks, wrote an article after China’s great flood in 2008. He wrote about the lack of grieving among those Chinese who lost children, spouses and parents. The following five thoughts in his article, and how they pertain to Chinas Culture and our own, are worth contemplating:
- It is hard to be sorry for yourself when 70,000 people just died
- Chinese culture is synonymous with community
- Chinese government is interwoven with the people’s lives
- The Chinese everyman is not affluent and expects bad things to happen
- The Olympics brought China into the modern world and has given the people tremendous sense of pride
