“I Can Do This YOGA” Video

After teaching yoga for many years I was asked by my students to create a video. The result is a DVD that contains two forty-five minute practices. If you decide to embark
On my yoga course via this DVD I have a few suggestions in addition to those listed above.

  1. Please watch the whole video before starting: you will work parts of your body that you may never have moved before or whose names you might not know. Please notice that in the beginning, most students are sitting on their feet with a block under their bottom. You can place a few books under your spine to help you keep your spine lengthened. The spine is the core of asana practice: it is the channel to your central nervous system.
  2. Every day your body will have a different endurance level and your practice will help you become aware of this.
  3. Begin by doing the first 10 minutes of the video. Do the first practice one day and the second on another.
  4. Never force a posture. Be patient and gentle with yourself. Follow your breath – if your breath becomes labored, come out of the pose and move to the floor in child’s pose. (Practice 1 will explain the child’s pose.)
  5. Learn to distinguish between sensation and pain, which is a signal to stop. Sensation is an awakening from an unfamiliar movement.
  6. Try to be focused on your breath in each movement and listen to your body.

The video gives instruction on alignment of your body in each posture and provides repetition of postures. Repetition allows you to feel the poses more deeply and to be in your body. My instruction will help you connect your breath with your movement, which will help you cultivate your awareness.

The Sanskrit word, “Ahimsa" means non-harmful. Please be mindful of ahimsa while practicing the asanas (postures) in this video and by going about your daily responsibilities. One cannot practice ahimsa in the world until one first practices with oneself.
